Salthill Garden

Salthill House was built in the mid 18th century as part of the Conyngham Estate. The house overlooking Donegal Bay is 52 feet above sea level at low water. The “footprint” typical of the time is that of the - dwelling, yard and walled garden. The current garden began in 1984, when it was an acre of grass with some cultivation under the 10 foot high walls. Now there are winding gravel and grass paths and a collection of perennials, trees, shrubs and roses. The tradition of ‘ridges’ or ‘lazy beds’ is maintained and hosts seasonal vegetables. This little oasis of 1.03 acres has its own unique micro-climate, lovingly cared for with organic principles.

Salthill Garden is well illustrated in “The Irish Garden” by Jane Powers and with photographs by Jonathon Hession. She aptly describes the space “the half hectare enclosure has a delightful feeling of privacy and mystery that is particular to old walled gardens”. So come and witness “the great gatherings of herbaceous plants amid mature shrubs and noteworthy trees”.
