Glenalla House

The country estate garden of Glenalla was established in the late 18th century with extensive landscaping by Harts, then the Franklin family since 1913. Botanist Henry Chichester Hart (author of The Flora of County Donegal) planted specimens in the garden from his travels. Beyond the house and walled kitchen garden are the formal elements of rockery, rose beds, arbour and stone edged lily pond leading to shrubberies. There are collections of rhododendrons together with summer and autumn flowering trees, such as cryptomeria, sequoia and Liriodendron tulipifera, the Tulip Tree. A grassy walk leads through the wildflower meadow to the lake and bog garden established in the 1920’s. In the woods, there is a waterfall and tree ferns and a beech maze that surrounds a neolithic standing stone. Fine specimen trees include the Handkerchief Tree Davidia involucrata. The woodlands are being restored as native woodlands where invasive laurel and rhododendron are being removed.
